The Coast
Leaving Tel Aviv to the north along the coast is Caesarea, King Herod's city where you'll discover remains of a Roman and Byzantine city along the sea shore with its typical theater and amphitheatre and a fascinating remain testifying of Pontius Pilate, the roman Governor who sentenced Jesus to death. Also in Caesara Paul was held in prison during two years before he was sent to Rome where he was executed. Who was Rabbi Akiva and why was he too sentenced to death here by the Romans? This is part of a crucial chapter in the history of the Jewish People during the 2nd century CE. Heading north to Haifa we visit the golden domed shrine of the Bahai prophet, the Bab. What is this religion about? How and when did it found its way from Iran to Haifa? What is the importance of those magnificent gardens on the slope of Mount Carmel? Less than an hour ride will take you back to the Crusaders times in Acre which has been the main maritime city to the Crusaders in the region during a century before the Mameluks destroyed it and put an end to this christian period.
Key sites: Caesarea, Haifa, Bahai Shrine, Acre, Acre Market, Crusaders Knight Halls, Rosh Hanikra
